How do you move more than 10,000 m³ of sand from ports navigation channel to the beach – efficiently and with minimal handling?
The answer lies in the collaboration between two specialized marine construction vessels.
In autumn 2025, the vessels Lea Høj and Veluwe worked side by side in the German port of Glowe, where Høj Nordic Marine Contractor carried out a dredging project for DDW. Glowe is an idyllic coastal town on the northeastern part of the German island of Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Situated on the Baltic Sea at the western transition between the Jasmund and Schaabe peninsulas, it is known for its long sandy beach.
A total of 10,321 m³ of sand was dredged from the navigation channel and port basin and pumped directly onto the beach, where the material was beneficially reused for beach nourishment.
Precision below the surface
As an excavator and marine construction vessel, Lea Høj is designed for a wide range of offshore and coastal construction projects – from dredging and excavation to rock placement and harbour construction.
Equipped with a precision positioning system, the vessel delivers highly accurate underwater operations, even on projects with demanding tolerances.
In Glowe, Lea Høj carried out the dredging works as well as a range of additional marine construction activities, including reinstating rock armour on the breakwater, restoring the breakwater toe, and relocating concrete anchor blocks prior to the reinstallation of the port’s floating pontoons.
When the material needs to move on
Where Lea Høj completed one stage of the operation, Veluwe took over.
Veluwe operates as a floating pumping station capable of transporting dredged material over distances of up to four kilometers, with a pumping capacity of up to 1,500 m³ per hour. This makes the vessel an efficient solution for transferring dredged material directly for re-use.
In Glowe, this meant the sand could be pumped directly from the port to the beach, where it was reused for beach nourishment without the need for additional handling or reloading.
Strength through collaboration
Each vessel brings its own specialized capabilities. Together, they form an integrated solution in which dredging, material transport and marine construction works can be carried out as one seamless operation.
The Glowe project demonstrates that successful harbour projects are not only about the capabilities of an individual vessel, but about the effective collaboration on the water.
