Dredging at German island

Efficient dredging ensures free passage and improved navigation in Kirchdorf harbour

On the small island of Pöel, located in the Baltic Sea off the northern German coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Høj Nordic Marine Contractor has completed an extensive dredging operation in the harbour basin of the island’s main town, Kirchdorf. The project required mobilisation of the two dredge vessels: Elisabeth Høj and Lea Høj.

The fairway and outer harbour basin had been dredged earlier same year, but this time Elisabeth Høj and Lea Høj removed sediments in areas which had limited access the first time. In total, approximately 4,300 m³ of material was dredged.

The dredge material was transported by split hopper barge and tug to an approved offshore dump site, located about 13 nautical miles from the harbour. During the works, three large boulders weighing between 1 and 3 tonnes were recovered from the fairway.

Høj Nordic Marine Contractor carried out the project together with our colleague and partner  DDW for Hegemann as client.
