Demanding dredging operation in the German Wadden Sea

Vilma Høj has undertaken a complex and specialized dredging operation in the German part of the Wadden Sea. The assignment involved dredging to a depth of -4.5 meters at a ferry berth and was carried out as part of a regular maintenance routine performed each spring and autumn. The purpose was to ensure sufficient draft for ferry operations and to maintain safe navigational conditions in the shallow and dynamic waters.

Tidal conditions required precision
The work was performed under particularly challenging conditions due to strong tidal currents in the area. A key limitation was that dredging operations were only permitted during the outgoing tide. This demanded thorough planning, flexibility, and precision—both in terms of timing and execution. The crew had to adapt to shifting tidal cycles and operate within narrow time frames to meet the strict operational constraints.

Despite natural and logistical challenges, the task was completed efficiently and with a high level of professionalism. Vilma demonstrated her capacity and versatility in an environment where both technical competence and local knowledge are essential.

The project is a clear example of routine dredging in tidal areas, where rapid sedimentation can quickly obstruct maritime traffic. It also highlights the importance of being able to operate under complex natural conditions with full respect for both environmental and safety
