Erosion protection – the interplay between the seabed, hydrodynamic conditions, and structural engineering

Beneath the water’s surface, scour is a constant challenge. Currents, waves, and vessel traffic gradually displace sediment and can, over time, undermine slopes, shorelines, and bridge piers that are part of critical infrastructure. That is why scour protection is an essential part of modern marine construction.

At Høj Nordic Marine Contractor, we deliver scour protection projects across Northern Europe. With specialized vessels such as Aase Høj and Martha Høj, we carry out these operations with a high level of precision – even in demanding conditions. Our vessels enable us to transport large volumes of rock and place them accurately on the seabed, protecting slopes, embankments, bridge piers, and other marine structures against scour. Combined with our experienced crews, advanced surveying systems, and specialized equipment, we deliver durable solutions designed to perform for decades.

One example is our work at the Alssund Bridge, where we carried out scour protection around bridge piers 5 and 6. We supplied and placed approximately 1,800 m³ of rock to protect the surrounding slopes and embankments from erosion. Using our vessel Aase Høj and our in-house excavation system, the rock was installed with high precision and continuously quality-controlled to ensure the protection was placed accurately according to the design profile.

Scour protection is about more than placing rock. It requires an understanding of the interaction between the seabed, hydrodynamic conditions, and marine structures – and the expertise to transform that knowledge into long-lasting solutions that protect critical infrastructure for decades.

When the sea moves the seabed, we make sure the infrastructure stays in place.
